Today I worked at the Utah Summer Games Track & Field instead of in the office. It was a nice break sitting outside under a shady tent. I was mainly fixing problems with athlete registrations – making sure it got updated in the computer. Ben got there about 11am, they brought us pizza at 2pm and I left about 3pm. As soon as I got home I started packing the car and getting everything ready to go. Tomorrow would be my 10-year high school reunion and I needed to make sure I didn’t leave anything in Cedar City.
We got up to Richfield about 8pm and went to the Annabella church to start decoration. Amber, Dan, and my parents were already there and had almost all of the tables and chairs setup. We decided to setup everything we could so we there would be minimal setup on Saturday. It turned out looking pretty good!

We first met at the park across from the high school at 11am for people to bring their families and chat. Only a handful of people showed up: Edward Jones, Jeremy Winn, Audie Ekker and family, Rachelle Woolsey Jensen and family, Amber Brown Riddle and family, Michelle Hutchings Christensen and family, Liz Peterson Gurney and family, Chandra Landen and family, Carolee Peterson and family, and Tara Sitthichai Chaston and family – oh, and me and my family. I took pictures of everyone’s family except for mine. For some reason I never think about taking my picture. I did get some cute pictures of the kids.

I had Liz Gurney, her husband Lauren, and two kids come and hang out at my mom’s house until the night time activity. She wasn’t going to stay but decided she needed to make better high school memories. We went about 5pm to do a few more minor setups and then waited for people and the caterer to arrive.
At 5:30pm people started to arrive, but still no caterer. About 6pm almost everyone had arrived and were mingling – still no caterer. Finally at 6:15 we decided that Dan and Monty would go get pizza and drinks for everyone. Rachelle and Amber were almost in tears, and I was trying to stay calm. As they were walking out the door here comes Sam with the food. I guess he’d gotten lost.
Well, after that things went really smooth. I welcomed everyone to the reunion, and then we started eating. When the food was just about gone and everyone had started in on dessert I put in the slide show I’d been working on for almost a year. That went really well and everyone enjoyed it. After the slide show we had everyone look under their chairs for a yellow sticky note. Anyone with a sticky note had to go up on stage and be apart of the game show. Rachelle took charge of that. We had about 15-20 questions about events, people and the high school. The game show was really fun – no one could remember the color of the lockers before they were painted or the classmate that had the dirty nickname. After the game show me, Amber, and Rachelle got up and asked for volunteers to do the 20-year reunion. Well of course no hands went up. So after about 20 minutes of pleading we got Lena Rose Vincent, Deanna Gay Ketner, and Maria Bagley Holder to do the next reunion. We told them that they could decide whether or not they wanted to have a 15 or 20. The awards were next, and Amber took charge of those. Mark Oldroyd came the furthest and was the baldest, and Chandra and Terry Landen were married the longest (12 years!), we gave them a bottle of Viagra (it was just jelly beans, but it was still funny). We gave out quite a few other awards, and that was it. People stuck around for about 30-45 minutes, but everyone was gone by 8:30pm. Cleaning up was easy, and we were home before 9:30pm. All-in-all everything was very successful and I wish the next committee good luck!
I'm glad your reunion went well. Even if the caterer was late. And now the stress of planning the reunion is over and the torch has been passed to someone else. You'll have to see if they come up with something fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm also jealous that you guys get food when you go down to the track. It sucks that every year Mark takes half the floor down to help with that and I'm always left sitting here alone. Oh well, I guess somebody has to hold down the fort!

ReplyDeleteAs I said before, you are the "Reunion Planner" - Coming To a Theatre Near You!
Mark does take quite of few of the people on the floor. You'll have to help him out next year and then you'll for sure get lunch and some time out of the office.
ReplyDeleteI have passed along the school reunion torch, but still have the family reunion to plan. Tell you what Neil, you can come and film me planning the reunion and enter it into the Thunderbird Film Festival. :)
